I find your take on storeyum reallly interesting. I am an MA student of Anthropology who has chosen to make Storyeum the focus of my research for the exact reasons you have stated- the re-creation of 'heritage' by a corporate body - is an strange idea . . . trend of 'edutainment' (which I have been calling 'infotainment') that obviously seeks entertainment value above authenticity. I would love to hear more of your thoughts.. . .

That's amazing that you're writing a thesis about this. I'd love to hear more about what you come up with as you look into it. I'd recommend you take a look at HXI's other projects, too, as they're equally twisted. "Infotainment" is definitely the more standard colloquialism for what Storyeum is offering; I think I adopted the word "edutainment" from the Historical XPeriences site itself. (And I think they stole it from a Boogie Down Productions album title.) I think HXI is flattering itself by using either term; it's like calling sour cream and onion chips "Dairy Vegetable Crisps". No matter what adjectives or prefixes you apply, you're still offering nothing but empty calories.

Hey ninj! Oddly enough we stumbled upon this place (before reading your blog) while in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago. I confusedly thought it was some sort of tour of the underground but it consists of a ride in an giant elevator cum movie theatre. They then trot the group through some elaborate sets (ships/long houses/train stations). I'll spare you all the singing and dancing details but it was not the least bit entertaining. But then in Seattle we took the Bill Speidel Underground Tour and we quite enjoyed that. On the surface both tours were very similar (actors leading the tours, finishing the tour in a gift shop, etc) but the second one was great fun and didn't feel so plastic. Though as far as I know both were designed by the same edutainment guru and this Bill Speidel fellow never existed.

Thank you so much for puttingi into words what I've been feeling about Storyeum from the beginning. What concerns me the most about garbage like this is that the Sun and Province seem to take it seriously, which leads their readers to believe there is actual history. It's not history, his story, or her story - it's not any kind of story. The West Coast has a legitimate fascinating history including Coastal natives unique culture, Chinese traders, Russian fishermen, and Spanish explorers, all before the history-writing English and French got here. Even then, the real history of the Hudsons Bay company opening up the West Coast is full of fascinating and unique history. The sad and stupid part of Storyeum's nonsense is that they would have a money-making fun, exciting, and interesting show if they used the real history of the Lower Mainland instead of this schlock that threatens to teach people that there's no real history here.
